The Indian Army and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested the Army’s version of the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) four times on April 3 and 4, 2025, from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
High-speed aerial targets were the goal of the four operational flight trials. The missiles registered direct strikes, intercepted the aerial targets, and destroyed them. The operational capacity was demonstrated by the trials, which were conducted to intercept four targets at long-, short-, high-, and low-altitudes.
The weapon system was operational when the flight tests were conducted. The flight data obtained by range equipment such as radars and electro-optical tracking systems installed by Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, was used to verify the weapon system’s performance. The flight tests were carried out in the presence of senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Army.
Under the direction of the DRDO, the Indian Army’s Eastern and Southern Commands conducted the experiments. The operationalization of weapon systems in two regiments has been made possible by these trials, which have demonstrated the operational capability of both Army Commands.
Israel Aerospace Industries and DRDO collaborated to develop the MRSAM for the Indian Army. The command post, mobile launcher system, multi-function radar, and other vehicles make up the MRSAM Army’s weapon system.
The Indian Army, DRDO, and the industry have received congratulations from Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh for the successful flying tests. According to him, four successful tests have confirmed the missile system’s ability to intercept targets at crucial ranges.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, the chairman of the DRDO and secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, praised the teams that participated in the successful flight experiment, describing it as a significant milestone in the development of the Indian Army’s operational capacity.
