A total of 53 passengers tested positive for Covid-19 after the Centre began a 2% random testing process of international passengers arriving at airports across the country on December 24th, according to a highly placed source on Saturday.
According to the source, 5,666 passenger samples were collected for Covid-19 testing. According to the source, 53 international travelers tested positive for Covid out of the total samples collected.
“As directed by the Prime Minister, detailed guidelines for 2 per cent random screening of international passengers on arrival were issued and 2 per cent random sampling was initiated from December 24. As many as 1,716 international flights have been screened and 5,666 samples collected for testing. Total of 53 international travellers tested positive for Covid-19 during 2 per cent random sampling,” the source told IANS.
Meanwhile, P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, presided over a high-level meeting with senior Central government officials and experts to review the status of Covid in the country and compliance with directions given by PM Narendra Modi during the December 22 review meeting.
During the meeting, he was informed of the evolving global scenario of the pandemic, with spikes in Covid observed in some countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Brazil, among others.
Officials and experts met to discuss the status of Covid vaccination.
More than 220 crore doses of Covid vaccines have been administered, with 102.56 crore being first dose (97%) and 95.13 crore being second dose (90%) given so far to the eligible beneficiaries.
According to a source on Saturday, experts present at the meeting discussed issues concerning vaccine research and manufacturing in India.
