The 70th National Film Awards winners were announced on Friday at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. The ceremony will take place at a later date, when the President will celebrate the best Indian films produced in several languages in calendar year 2022. Feature and non-feature films approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between January 1 and December 31, 2022 were eligible for consideration. This year’s jury members include Rahul Rawail, Chairperson of the Feature Film Jury; Nila Madhab Panda, Chairperson of the Non-Feature Film Jury; and Gangadhar Mudalair, Chairperson of the Best Writing on Cinema Jury.
The Malayalam-language drama Aattam received the Best Feature Film award, while Rishab Shetty won the Best Actor award and the Best Actress honour was shared by Nithya Menen and Manasi Parekh. Ponniyin Selvan: 1 won the most awards, four.

The award ceremonies have been postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 69th National Film Awards, held in 2023, recognized the greatest Indian films approved in calendar year 2021. Rocketry won Best Feature Film, Allu Arjun won Best Actor, while Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon tied for Best Actress. At the 68th National Film Awards, the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru earned the top honor, while the late filmmaker Sachy won Best Director for Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Ajay Devgn and Suriya shared the Best Actor prize, while Aparna Balamurali received the Best Actress honor.
The National Film Awards, founded in 1954, are managed by the Directorate of Film Festivals. Shyamchi Aai, a Marathi film, won the inaugural Best Feature Film award. The most awarded film in the history of the awards is Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan, which got eight prizes in 2002. In addition to the national awards, the event recognizes the greatest films in regional languages and bestows the Dadasaheb Phalke Award on industry icons for lifetime achievements. Last year’s winner was Waheeda Rehman.
