The fifth and final Test between India and England which was scheduled to take place at Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday has been cancelled.
The England and Wales Cricket Board released an official statement to confirm the decision.
“Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled,” the ECB said in a statement.
“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team.
“We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.
“Further information will be shared in due course.”
According to reports, several Indian players were apprehensive about taking to the field after assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar tested positive for Covid-19.
All Indian players tested negative in the second batch of RT-PCR tests conducted on Thursday.
India were leading the five-match series 2-1 after a thumping victory at The Oval where the visitors won the match by 157 runs.
India suffered a setback during the 4th Test when 3 members of their support staff including head coach Ravi Shastri had tested positive for Covid. Apart from Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar had contracted the virus.
On the eve of the fifth Test, a member reportedly tested positive following which the decision to cancel the match had to be taken by both teams.
