On Wednesday, the Sensex and Nifty traded between gains and losses before closing in the red for the third day in a row.
The S&P BSE Sensex fell 303 points, or 0.56 percent, to 53,749, while the Nifty 50 fell 99 points, or 0.62 percent, to 16,025.
The top Sensex gainer was NTPC, which rose 3.8 percent, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Asian Paints fell 8%, accompanied by TCS and Tech Mahindra. Bank The Nifty outperformed the major indices, gaining 0.14 percent to close at 34,339.
The India VIX, or volatility index, fell 1.4 percent but remains above 25.
