Today on Monday, bears gripped Indian equity markets as investors around the world avoided risky assets. The BSE Sensex fell 1,776 points intraday before closing at 52,847, down 1,457 points or 2.68 percent, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 427 points, or 2.64 percent, to 15,774. In intraday trading, the index fell to 15,684.
The Nifty MidCap 100 and SmallCap 100 fell 2.9 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, in the broader markets. Sectorally, all NSE indices fell, with the Nifty IT and Media indices falling 4% each and the Nifty Bank falling more than 3%. Bond yields rose, while emerging market currencies fell to new lows against the US dollar.
