According to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova, Russia is being investigated for over 21,000 war crimes and crimes of aggression committed since its February 24 invasion of Kiev.
Venediktova told the BBC on Wednesday that she was receiving reports of 200 to 300 war crimes on a daily basis.
She acknowledged that many trials would be held in absentia, but insisted that continuing with the prosecutions was a “question of justice.”
Venediktova told the BBC that Russian soldiers who killed, tortured or raped civilians “should understand that it’s only a question of time when they all will be in court”
She stated that, despite working in various regions of Ukraine, her team was unable to investigate all cases “properly and effectively” due to a lack of access to certain people and areas.
Venediktova stated in May that approximately 600 suspects had already been identified and that 80 prosecutions had begun.
Sgt Vadim Shishimarin, the first Russian soldier tried in Ukraine, was sentenced to life in prison for killing a civilian.
Ukraine has been described as a “crime scene” by the International Criminal Court, which has sent its largest team of detectives ever to the country to assist in multiple investigations.
Russia, on the other hand, has repeatedly denied all allegations of war crimes and targeting civilians.
