Renowned Gazal singer and guitarist Bhupinder Singh, who for years gave voice to a wounded heart, died in Mumbai on Monday evening at the age of 82 due to multiple health issues.
Mr. Singh’s heavy bass voice captured the weariness of the soul like no other over the years. Dil Dhoondta Hai Phir Wahi Fursat Ke Raat Din (Mausam) is a tried-and-true remedy for heartbreak. The reflective ghazal Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahan Nahin Milta (Ahista Ahista) continues to express the inadequacy of life. He was not only a versatile singer, but he also played guitar for Ustad Vilayat Khan in Kadambari. Or, for that matter, his beguiling Rasiya Man Behkaye for M.B. Srinivasan in Manju puts him in the rarefied classical universe.
Mr. Singh was born in Amritsar and raised in Delhi’s West Patel Nagar, where he was introduced to music by his father, Prof. Natha Singh, who was also a musician. From a young age, he was interested in playing various instruments, and there was never any doubt that he would pursue music as a career.
After learning to play the guitar, he began working as a casual artist for All India Radio under the direction of composer Satish Bhatia. Mr. Singh’s voice had a different tonal base, so he began giving him opportunities to sing. Mr. Singh was introduced to Madan Mohan by Bhatia during the composer’s visit to Delhi. He performed Lagta Nahin Hai Dil Mera Ujade Dayar Main by Bahadur Shah Zafar for him. He invited Mr. Singh to Mumbai and offered him Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bhulaya Hoga in Haqeeqat. The song, like most of his hits, has stood the test of time.
Bhupinder Singh was a well-known Ghazal singer, and some of his most well-known songs were Usne Bulaya Hoga Hoke Majboor, Among the many songs are Naam gum jayega, Dil Dhoondta hai, Meethe bol bole, Ek akela is Shehar Mein, Do diwane shahar mein, Karoge yaad to, and Kabhi kisi ko mukammal.
He sang the song Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga for Chetan Anand’s Haqeeqat alongside Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi, and Talat Mahmood.
In the 1980s, he refocused on private albums, and he and his wife, Mitali Mukherjee, emerged as a ghazal singing force. She assisted him in adapting to the demands of stage shows. During Doordarshan’s New Year’s Eve shows, the duo entertained millions.
Mr. Singh received numerous awards, but he was overjoyed when the Sangeet Natak Akademi honored him in the’sugam sangeet’ (light music) category.
