Despite the presence of Ranbir Kapoor, who has returned to the big screen after a four-year absence, and the actor he has played in a biopic, Sanjay Dutt, “Shamshera” ranks 11th among opening weekends, according to the trade news and reviews website www.bollymoviereviewz.com.
The period action drama produced by Yash Raj Films, which is expected to gross Rs 32-34 crore in its first weekend, opened in 5,550 screens worldwide, so there’s only one way to interpret the collection figure — the film didn’t do well. It is even lower than the most recent flop from YRF, “Samrat Prithviraj,” which grossed Rs 39.4 crore.
The first weekend box office is a good indicator of where a film is going. The only recent exception was “The Kashmir Files,” which grew (and grew!) as a result of the buzz generated by the film during its first weekend.
Keeping that in mind, compare the “Shamshera” collection to the collections of the ten films listed above: “KGF: Chapter 2” earned Rs 193.99 crore; “Doctor Strange 2” earned Rs 79.5 crore; “RRR” earned Rs 75.57 crore; “Thor: Love and Thunder” earned Rs 64.8 crore; “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2” earned Rs 55.96 crore; “Samrat Prithviraj” earned Rs 39.4 crore; “Gangubai Kathiawadi” earned Rs 39.12 crore; “Jugjugg Jeeyo”, Rs 36.93 crore; “Bachchan Pandey”, Rs 36.17 crore; and, finally, the third Hollywood release on this list, “Jurassic World Dominion”, Rs 35.55 crore.
According to www.bollymoviereviewz.com, “Shamshera” cost Rs 150 crore to make, of which Rs 50 crore was Ranbir’s fee. The production house’s renegotiated Rs 350-crore, four-movie deal with Amazon is the only reason for YRF’s lack of concern. Unfortunately for the streaming service, three of the four films — “Bunty Aur Babli 2,” “Jayeshbhai Jordaar,” and “Samrat Prithviraj” — have performed poorly at the box office. “Shamshera” doesn’t provide much hope either.
