Naga Panchami is a Hindu festival dedicated to snake worship. It is observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, Shravan.
Nag Panchami is celebrated two days after Hariyali Teej. Snake gods are worshiped on this day to seek their blessings for the family. Women perform puja for the serpent gods. Milk and puja are also given to live snakes.
Fasting on this auspicious day is also advised because it is thought to protect against snakebites.
Rituals: Married women attend the festival ritual at their parents’ home. They rise early in the morning, bath, and perform puja at ant hills where snakes live.
Also the idols, which are made of silver, stone, wood, or a painting of snakes, are bathed in milk or honey mixed with saffron and their blessings are sought for the welfare of brothers and family.
On this day, cobras or cobra idols are also worshiped. On this day, milk is given to the snakes.
