As the country continues to record over 15,000 coronavirus cases per day, the Centre has asked states to avoid large gatherings for Independence Day celebrations and to ensure that everyone follows Covid protocols.
The Union Home Ministry has also directed all states and union territories to hold a ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign in a prominent location in each district of each state and UT, as well as a fortnight and month-long campaign to keep it clean through voluntary civil action.
In a communication, the ministry said, “As a precaution, against COVID-19, large congregations in the ceremony be avoided. It is imperative that Covid guidelines are followed”.
According to Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday, India added 16,561 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of Covid cases to 4,42,23,557, while active cases fell to 1,23,535.
The death toll has risen to 5,26,928 with 49 fatalities, including 10 deaths reconciled by Kerala, according to data updated at 8 a.m.
The Home Ministry also requested that government departments and educational institutions carry out tree planting campaigns to raise environmental awareness.
