Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Samarkand on Thursday at the invitation of Uzbekistan’s President, H.E. Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of Heads of State (SCO).
When the Prime Minister arrived in Samarkand, he was greeted warmly by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Aripov, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. Several Ministers, the Governor of the Samarkand region, and other senior officials from the Uzbek government greeted the Prime Minister at the airport.
On Friday, the Prime Minister will attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and will hold bilateral meetings with the President of Uzbekistan and other leaders attending the Summit.
Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan founded the regional multilateral organization in 2001, with India and Pakistan becoming full members in 2017.
The Council of the SCO Heads of State is the organization’s highest decision-making body, and it meets annually at a summit hosted by a SCO member state.
Since India became a full member of the SCO in 2017, Prime Minister Modi has led the Indian delegation to the SCO Summit every year, since India became its full member in 2017. During the last two summits in 2020 and 2021, he participated in the virtual format.
