Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, will be celebrated on Thursday, October 13. The festival is held every year on the fourth day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartik. While Karwa refers to earthen pots (used for moon offerings known as Argha), Chauth refers to the fourth day. On this day, married Hindu women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without water or food), pray to the moon, and wish for the safety and long life of their husbands. It is primarily observed in northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
On this day, married women pray for the long life, prosperity, and safety of their husbands. They pray to Karwa Mata, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha and perform a nirjala vrat by not drinking or eating for the entire day.
In the evening, women gather to perform Karwa Chauth puja, read the Karwa Chauth story, and break the fast after seeing the moon. When the moon rises, they look through a sieve at it and their husband, pray to the moon, and make an offering. Finally, they finish the vrat with a morsel of food and a sip of water from their husband’s hands. As a result, knowing the exact time of the moonrise is important.
The moon will rise at 08:09 p.m. on Karwa Chauth, according to Drik Panchang. Furthermore, the puja muhurat is from 05:54 p.m. to 07:08 p.m., and the vrat time is from 06:20 a.m. to 08:09 p.m. The Chaturthi tithi begins at 01:59 a.m. on October 13 and ends at 03:08 a.m. on October 14.
