Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Jayanti: It is because of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that we Indians can now freely travel throughout India’s stunning and abundant lands, from Kutch to Kohima and Kargil to Kanyakumari. For his tactics that aided in the political unification of the country as well as the orderly incorporation of over 500 princely states, he is often referred to as the Unifier of the Nation or The Iron Man of India.
National Unity Day is observed every year on October 31. This day marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs for the first three years of Indian independence. He also had a number of other portfolios.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born in Nadiad, Gujarat, on October 31, 1869. During the Indian freedom movement, he was a leading figure in the country.
During the Gujarati Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928, he was given the title ‘Sardar,’ which means ‘chief or leader’ in Gujarati and most other Indian languages. The Bardoli Satyagraha is regarded as a pivotal instance of civil disobedience and revolt in India’s Independence Movement. Sardar Patel was imprisoned ten times between 1930 and 1945 as a result of his beliefs and actions.
Patel was instrumental in uniting and shaping the Indian Union. He united India’s princely states under the Union of India.
Prior to independence, India had approximately 565 princely states, and the Congress faced a significant challenge in persuading them to join India peacefully. Sardar Patel was the man who accepted the responsibility and carried it out successfully.
He used every trick in the book. He was courteous to those who were reasonable and willing to participate. He was firm with those who were hesitant and had their own plans. He did not hesitate to send an army wherever it was required.
Patel’s “stick and carrot” policy paid off handsomely, and all but three princely states willingly merged with India. The three states were – Junagadh, Hyderabad and Jammu and Kashmir.
Very few people know that Patel was one of the primary people involved in drafting the Constitution of India.
