Yashoda, Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s latest film, debuted to strong box office numbers on its first day. According to trade analysts, the medical thriller earned around Rs 3.5 crore on day one globally.
Yashoda joins the list of South films that have struck a chord with overseas audiences, particularly in the United States, following Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Kantara. It is a significant achievement for Samantha and the film, which is up against Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in India.
The good response to the film has filled Samantha with gratitude. She has been flooding Twitter with thank-you notes. She wrote, “This time, more than ever, I was hoping and praying for all your support in promoting the film. The affection you have showered on me & Yashoda in the run up to the release is humbling. Forever grateful to all of you. You are my family Truly hope you enjoy the film. Thank you (sic).”
Meanwhile, critics have differing views on Yashoda. While the film has received praise for its sharp script and unexpected twists, it has also received criticism for its poor execution. The film received two stars from Manoj Kumar of Indian Express, who wrote, “Samantha Ruth Prabhu brings grace to the role.” However, the film’s unintelligent grindhouse treatment negates the impact of Samantha’s powerful performance.”
Yashoda is directed by Hari-Harish and stars Samantha in the title role, as well as Unni Mukundan, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Rao Ramesh, and Murali Sharma. Mani Sharma composed the music.
