The University Grants Commission has finalized the framework for the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP), which will be implemented in all higher education institutions beginning with the upcoming academic session 2023-2024. (UGC).
According to the UGC, these regulations for four-year undergraduate programs will be distributed to all universities in the country beginning next week.
The FYUGP will be implemented in the majority of state and private universities, as well as all 45 central universities, beginning with the upcoming academic session. Furthermore, many deemed universities will agree to the program’s implementation.
ABOUT 4-YEAR UG PROGRAMMES
The FYUGP is expected to receive UGC approval for both current and former students beginning in 2023-2024, when all new students will be able to choose four-year undergraduate programs.
This means that students enrolled in standard three-year undergraduate programs this academic year may be able to join the four-year degree program beginning the following session.
According to the UGC, all students will have access to a four-year undergraduate program, but they will not be required to enroll in it. A student may choose to complete the three-year undergraduate program.
According to UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar, the entire four-year undergraduate course schedule will be made public soon.
FYUGP RULES
Students who are already enrolled in universities and are in their first or second year, according to the UGC chairman, will be given the opportunity to take four-year undergraduate courses.
The UGC will also allow individual universities to establish their own rules and regulations through their academic and executive councils.
According to the chairman, depending on what the university decides, even a final-year student may be given the opportunity to enroll in the 4-year UG program.
The UGC chairman explained the significance of these changes, stating that if only new students were allowed to enroll in FYUGP, the program’s outcomes would be known in four years.
However, if older children are given the opportunity to participate, the results will be apparent sooner.
MPHIL AND PHD
Students pursuing a two-year postgraduate degree and an MPhil must receive a grade of at least 55% after completing four years of undergraduate coursework in order to be admitted to a PhD program.
The MPhil program, on the other hand, will not be available for much longer. As part of the National Education Policy changes, several large universities will stop offering MPhil courses in the coming years.
DISAPPROVAL FROM ACADEMICS
Despite the UGC’s complete readiness for the FYUGP, many teachers and teacher organizations have expressed their displeasure. They argue that it will burden students with an additional year’s worth of debt.
