Every year on December 4, India celebrates Navy Day with grand displays of the naval force’s capabilities.
The day commemorates “Operation Trident” during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, when the Indian Navy bombed Karachi’s harbor.
Navy Day is an opportunity to both celebrate the Navy’s accomplishments and pay tribute to heroes.
The week preceding Navy Day is marked by photo exhibitions, blood donation camps, and the opening of warships to the public.
For the first time in history, the main Navy Day event will take place outside of Delhi.
Ships, submarines, and Special Forces from the Eastern, Western, and Southern Naval Commands will be on display in Visakhapatnam today.
The event will conclude with a sunset ceremony and lighting up of ships at anchorage.
President Droupadi Murmu will be the honored guest at the event, which will be hosted by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff. The ceremony will also feature dignitaries from the federal and state governments.
This year’s celebrations were extra special because India celebrated 75 years of independence.
“This year, as India ushers in the ‘Amrit Kaal’ with the commencement of the celebrations of 75 years of her independence, the Indian Navy is all set to demonstrate India’s combat prowess and capability through an ‘Operational Demonstration’,” the government said.
