Diabetes patients frequently avoid foods such as wheat and rice. A person with this lifestyle disease must control their carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake. Experts believe that a low-carb and high-protein diet can help you improve your condition by allowing you to find alternatives.
“Diabetes is a disease of lifestyle. It is caused by a relative or absolute lack of insulin in the blood, which is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. A diabetic is someone whose insulin level is less than or relatively less than the standard blood sugar level. Diabetes, a painful and silent disease, is becoming more common as a result of poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles “Dr. Shahid Shafi, Consultant Internal Medicine, Ujala Cygnus BrightStar Hospital, Moradabad stated.
A diabetic should eat a low-calorie diet as a general rule. However, most health experts agree that a typical Indian diet is high in sugar and carbohydrates. “We have to find a way around it by curating our breakfast, lunch, and dinner accordingly to get fewer carbs and more protein,” Dr. Shafi explained.
He also mentioned that wheat and rice are staple foods throughout the country. These carbohydrates-rich foods have a high glycemic index, which means they are quickly broken down in the body, resulting in an increase in blood sugar levels. Sugary foods have the same effect.
“Some alternatives to wheat and rice include pulses with a low glycemic index and few calories, such as bajra and ragi. You can eat bajra, which is high in fiber, and use it to make paranthas. Raji is also a high-fiber food. You can eat multigrain oats. “For a nutritious breakfast, make smoothies by blending fruits and sprouts,” suggested Dr Shafi.
ALTERNATIVES FOR WHEAT AND RICE
He stated that people all over the country can find solutions based on the foods available in each region. “For example, if someone is from Gujarat, they can eat dhokla, but it must be made with sprouts. The general rule to remember is that the carbohydrate content should be low. We can prepare dahlia with less oil since it is high in protein and have it with egg whites,” advised Dr Shafi.
Indian pancakes can be made with oat flour or buckwheat flour. A diabetic should avoid potatoes, in addition to wheat and rice, because they have a high glycemic index.
“Breakfast is essential, but it should be consumed in moderation. It must be done in such a way that our calorie intake and energy expenditure remain negative. Some insulin therapy patients must not skip breakfast because they have already been fasting for 8-10 hours. If breakfast is skipped, they will experience hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar levels “Dr. Shafi advised.
