JEE Main 2023: In a relief to students aspiring to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced on Tuesday that, in addition to the eligibility criteria of scoring 75% or higher in class 12, students from the top 20%ile of all boards will be eligible to seek admission based on their JEE Main score.
Because the JEE Advanced has the same criterion, this part-relaxation will allow students to compete for seats across NITs.
According to the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) JEE Main information brochure, in addition to the candidate’s All India Rank (AIR) in the national entrance test for engineering admissions, aspirants are expected to score 75 percent and above in class 12, in order to be eligible for admission. For SC/ST candidates, the qualifying aggregate score was declared 65 per cent and above.
Previously, the same criterion was used, but it was suspended for three years due to the Covid pandemic. This was due to a lack of consistency in evaluation practices undertaken by various boards – both state and national – as a result of the pandemic conditions. The original eligibility criteria were reinstated with the restoration of normalcy in board exam evaluation.
However, this sparked opposition from prospective candidates and their parents. Many people took to Twitter to demand that the exam be postponed and that this criterion be removed. A petition was filed in the Bombay High Court to postpone the JEE-Main; the petition also requested that the 75 percent eligibility criterion be relaxed.
The MoE eventually intervened after receiving representations for the same. Following the requests, an additional eligibility criterion was added following a meeting on Tuesday. It was decided to include the 20-percentile criteria to ensure that those who do not score 75% or higher do not miss out on the opportunity to sit for the exam and then participate in the admission process.
Aside from their AIR in JEE Main, a student should have either scored 75% or higher in their class 12 board exam, or be among the top 20% of candidates in the respective board exam result, according to the revised eligibility criteria.
The registration process for JEE Main ends on January 12. The first session of the national level entrance test is scheduled between January 24-31.
