On the eve of Republic Day, an official statement confirmed that no one has been named for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. While Birla, Murty, and novelist SL Bhyrappa have been named Padma Bhushan recipients, Bollywood actors Raveen Tandon and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala (posthumously) have been named Padma Shri recipients. The winners of the Padma Awards, which are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day, will be honored at a glittering ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March or April.
This year, several ‘unsung heroes’ have been recognized for their unwavering dedication to society. Ratan Chandra Kar, a retired government doctor based in Andaman who has worked with the Jarawa tribe in the Nicobar Islands, is one of them, as is Naga social worker Ramkuiwangbe Newme, who has protected and promoted Heraka indigenous culture.
