Dr. Manik Saha took the oath as Tripura’s chief minister for the second time on Wednesday, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief JP Nadda. The BJP won 32 seats out of 60 in the recently concluded Assembly election, with a vote share of around 39%. Tipra Motha was the second-largest party, with 13 seats. Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Deb Barma congratulated Dr. Saha on his inauguration and stated that Tipra Motha, as the state’s second largest party, will always work in the best interests of the people of the state.
Dr. Manik Saha was appointed chief minister in 2022, succeeding Biplab Deb just months before the election. Despite working at the grassroots level for the BJP and serving as party chief in the state in 2020, he never ran for office before becoming chief minister. His first election was a byelection from Town Bardowali seat — the seat he retained this assembly election too.
Manik Saha joined the BJP in 2016 after leaving the Congress. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in March 2022.
The 69-year-old dental surgeon has a Mr clean image, which helped him become CM in a rebranding of the BJP ahead of the election after the party’s popularity in the state dropped due to Biplab Deb.
Dr. Saha earned a Bachelor of Dental Studies degree from Government Dental College in Patna and a Master of Dental Surgery degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from King Georges’ Medical College in Lucknow. Saha was the head of the department of dental surgery at Tripura Medical College and the Dr. BR Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in Hapania, Agartala. He received a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to dental surgery by the Indian Dental Association and Tripura government.
