On Friday, Xi Jinping was unanimously elected president of China for a historic third term at the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC).
According to the Xinhua news agency, he was also elected chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).
In an election with no other candidates, nearly 3,000 members of the (NPC) voted unanimously for Xi to be President at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
Following his election, President Trump, 69, made a public pledge of allegiance to the Constitution.
Xi’s new five-year term was made possible by a constitutional amendment repealing term limits in 2018.
The vote on Friday was largely symbolic, as he had already secured a historic third term as leader of the Chinese Communist Party at a major party congress last October, cementing his position as China’s most powerful ruler since Mao Zedong.
Every five years, the country’s leadership changes, which usually closely mirror the reshuffle announced at the party congress.
