Sulochana Latkar, a veteran performer and one of Bollywood’s favorite “moms,” has died. She was 94 years old. Sulochana was noted for her involvement in over 200 Hindi films as well as many Marathi movies. She was awarded the civilian honor of Padma Shri.
Kanchan Ghanekar, Sulochana’s daughter, said, “She had age-related health issues and breathing difficulties.” She died at 6 p.m. this evening.” Her antim darshan will take place at her Prabhadevi home, and her cremation will take place on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Shivaji Park crematorium.
Veteran actor Sulochana Latkar, known for her work in Hindi and Marathi films. She has been part of several Hindi movies such as ‘Bandini’, ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, and ‘Nagin’, “Heera”, “Reshma Aur Shera”, “Jaani Dushman”, “Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai”, “Jhonny Mera Naam”, “Kati Patang”, Mere Jeevan Saathi”, “Prem Nagar”, and “Bhola Bhala”.
She was also well known for her performances in Marathi films such as ‘Sasurvas’, ‘Vahinichya Bangdya’, ‘Meeth Bhakar’, ‘Sangtye Aika’ and ‘Dhakti Jau’. Her other notable works include ‘Ab Dilli Dur Nahin’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke’, ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, ‘Aasha’, and ‘Majboor’, ‘Nai Roshni’, ‘Aayi Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Gora Aur Kala’, ‘Devar’, ‘Bandini’ amongst others.
In Bollywood, the actor largely played on-screen mother to lead stars of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s including Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan.
PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “The passing of Sulochana Ji leaves a big void in the world of Indian cinema. Her unforgettable performances have enriched our culture and have endeared her to people across generations. Her cinematic legacy will live on through her works. Condolences to her family. Om Shanti.”
Madhuri Dixit wrote, “Sulochana Tai was one of the most loved and graceful actresses cinema has seen. My favourite film of hers will always be Sangate Aika. Her performance in every film was memorable. I will miss our conversations may you rest in peace. Your contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered.”
Actor Riteish Deshmukh also shared an emotional message on Twitter recalling the seasoned actor. He wrote, ‘The news of the death of Sulochana Didi is very sad. A heartfelt tribute to this great actress who ruled the hearts of audiences in Marathi and Hindi cinema. She will always be remembered for her roles and for portraying a loving mother on-screen’.
