Sawan 2023 Start Date: This festival, known as Shravan, honors Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and will be held from July 4 through August 31, 2023. Sawan will be extended for two months this year, a rare occurrence after nearly two decades. The insertion of the “Malamas” month, an additional month incorporated into the Hindu lunar calendar to preserve synchronisation with the lunar cycle, is linked to the elongation. Because of the occurrence of an extra month in 2023, the Sawan celebration will be one month longer than usual. As a result, instead of the usual four Mondays and four Tuesdays dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, 2023 will see an abundance of eight Mondays and eight Tuesdays to commemorate these deities.
During the month of Sawan, the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, each Monday (Shravan Somwar) is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and each Tuesday to Goddess Parvati. Fasts for Goddess Parvati are commonly observed on Tuesdays. According to Drik Pachang, this fast is known as Mangal Gauri Vrat. This sacred festival’s legend, myth, and significance have a significant impact on Hinduism and the Hindu lunar calendar. As a result, Sawan is considered the holiest month in Hinduism.
History and Significance
According to legend, Lord Shiva ingested poison through Samudra Manthan to get amrit (nectar) in order to save the world. However, Goddess Parvati held his neck and saved him from the poison, which caused Lord Shiva further pain and injury.
Lord Shiva’s worshippers bring him holy water from the Ganga to heal his wounds as part of Sawan tradition. Furthermore, fasts observed on Shravan Shomvar are known as Shravan Shomvar Vrats and are observed to honor Lord Shiva as well as to pray for wealth, success, and marriage. Many people regard this month as Lord Shiva’s favorite because it is fully dedicated to him.
