Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing Updates, August 22: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to create history tomorrow when the Lander Module (LM) of its third Moon mission, Chandrayaan-3, attempts to land on the lunar surface at approximately 18.04 hours IST. It all comes down to the final 15 minutes, when the lander performs a vital technical maneuver, switching from a high-speed horizontal to a vertical position — in order to facilitate a gentle descent to the surface.
ISRO’s latest update: With just over a day to go, ISRO reported on Tuesday that everything was going according to plan and that the “mission is on schedule.” The lander module made contact with the Chandrayaan-2 lunar orbiter yesterday, opening up another channel of communication with Earth. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said the orbiter greeted the lander with the message “welcome, buddy”. ISRO also posted images of the far side of the Moon captured by the lander.
Why is this important: If the mission is successful, India will become the fourth country after the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union to master the technology of soft landing on the lunar surface. India will also be the first country to visit the Moon’s undiscovered larger south pole.
