At 5.30 p.m. IST on Wednesday, the low-pressure region over the south Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal had formed a well-defined low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea. Around Wednesday, it is expected to move west-northwestwards and deepen into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal. Following that, it is expected to travel northwestwards and build into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and surrounding southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department on its X account on Wednesday morning.
Given the IMD’s forecast, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued cautions to fishermen and warned them not to go out into the sea.
The SRC said, “Under the influence of the anticipated cyclonic system, squally wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over central Bay of Bengal (BoB) and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1, 2023. The wind speed is likely to reach 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on December 1 and the sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough.”
According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rain is expected in most regions, with isolated heavy rain expected across the Nicobar Islands from November 29 to December 1, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain on November 29.
On November 30, the Andaman Islands can expect light to moderate rainfall with isolated very heavy showers. Several coastal Odisha locations are also expected to receive heavy rain on November 29-30.
