In reaction to the most recent joint maritime exercise involving South Korea, the US, and Japan, North Korea said on Friday that it had tested an underwater nuclear weapon system that was under development.
The North Korean Defense Ministry stated it carried out a significant test of the “Haeil-5-23” in the East Sea, according to Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Yonhap News Agency describes the drills as “reckless” military conflict hysteria.
“Our army’s underwater nuke-based countering posture is being further rounded off, and its various maritime and underwater responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military maneuvers of the navies of the U.S. and its allies,” a spokesman of the Ministry said in a statement carried by the KCNA.
In response to Pyongyang’s most recent hypersonic missile launch, South Korea, the US, and Japan conducted combined naval operations with the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson from Monday through Wednesday.
