The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution that decides to convene the World Social Summit in 2025.
The summit’s objectives, as stated in the resolution that was approved on Monday, are to close the gaps, reaffirm the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and the Program of Action, and accelerate the 2030 Agenda’s implementation, according to Xinhua news agency.
It asks the president of the UN General Assembly to designate two co-facilitators, one from a developed nation and one from a developing nation, to oversee the intergovernmental process that prepares for the summit and its outcome, which is expected to be a succinct political statement reached by consensus.
Additionally, the resolution asks the UN secretary-general to allocate sufficient funds from already available resources to the intergovernmental preparatory process of the summit.
