According to authorities on Friday, the defense ministry has put out a bid to the state-owned aerospace conglomerate Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the purchase of 97 light combat aircraft (LCA Mk-1A) Tejas for the Indian Air Force.
The estimated cost of the fighter jets is approximately Rs 67,000 crore.
The Tejas aircraft serves as a formidable platform for offensive air support missions and air combat; its secondary functions include surveillance and anti-shipping activities.
The project to purchase 97 more Tejas planes for the Indian Air Force (IAF) was approved in November by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).
The IAF’s request for Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to modernize its fleet of Su-30 fighter aircraft was also accepted by the DAC.
