Iran President, Foreign Minister Death: In a one-day state of mourning following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the Indian national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the country today. An official told PTI that no official entertainment will take place during the state’s mourning period. Meanwhile, the United States announced on Monday that it was unwilling to accept an Iranian request for assistance following the chopper accident, citing “logistical reasons”. According to Reuters, the State Department revealed the unusual request from Iran, which regards the United States and Israel as its principal foes, at a news briefing.
Russia said it is ready to assist in Iran’s investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash that killed Raisi, state news agency RIA quoted Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu as saying. The charred wreckage of the helicopter which ‘crashed’ on Sunday carrying Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six other passengers and crew, was found early on Monday after an overnight search in blizzard conditions.
Several foreign leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed condolences over the loss of the leaders. Following Raisi’s death, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over Iran’s executive branch in accordance with the constitution. The accident comes at a time when Iran is confronting a number of obstacles, including discontent over a variety of political and economic issues, as well as foreign criticism for its support for Hamas and expanding military links with Russia during the war in Ukraine.
