According to Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda, the Commissionerate Police has now decided to seize mobile phones and vehicles belonging to drivers who use their phones while driving a vehicle.
Speaking to the media, the Police Commissioner stated that since cell phone usage is one of the primary causes of traffic accidents, the city police have chosen to seize cell phones as part of their Safe City campaign.
In the past, using earbuds, mobile phones, or Bluetooth devices while driving was strictly forbidden. Violators faced the possibility of having their vehicles seized and reported to the authorities or facing legal action. But now, the police will also grab the cell phone.
Panda went on to say, that as several cases of traffic rule violators attempting to mow down the police personnel while checking vehicles and escape have come to the fore, we have decided to spread spikes on the road and nab them. Section 307 of the IPC will also be used to register a case against such individuals.
In the meantime, over the past four days, the Commissionerate Police have confiscated at least 400 cars for breaking traffic laws such as driving while intoxicated, operating a vehicle in the incorrect lane, using a phone while driving, running a red light at a traffic signal post, and other infractions.
According to Panda, police have written to the RTO to revoke the offenders’ driver’s licenses. They also said that the violators can still keep their vehicles back after paying the requisite penalty in the court.
