Teachers’ Day: Teachers’ Day is observed on September 5 in India to honour the contributions of educators such as teachers, researchers, and professors. This day commemorates Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. He was also posthumously granted the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour in 1954 and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Madras Presidency. Dr. Radhakrishnan, a renowned teacher, taught at prestigious universities such as the University of Calcutta and Oxford University. He was also an accomplished writer who promoted international understanding through his talks in the United States and Europe.
Teachers’ Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s first Vice President and second President. Dr. Radhakrishnan was an educator, and his students once asked him if they might celebrate his birthday.
While he denied specific recognition for himself, Dr. Radhakrishnan urged that students observe the day as Teachers’ Day to recognize teachers’ outstanding contributions to society. Since 1962, September 5 has been observed as Teachers’ Day to pay tribute to his and all teachers’ exceptional contributions to education.
The President of India will deliver the National Award to Teachers on Teachers’ Day 2024, as she does every year. The award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of excellent teachers who have not only improved educational quality but also had a major impact on the lives of their students.

Teachers’ Day is observed in all educational institutions around the country. Students pay respect to their instructors with speeches, music, and cultural displays. In schools, senior students often dress up as instructors and teach junior courses. Students also give their instructors gifts, cards, and flowers as signs of appreciation.
