Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Quad Cancer Moonshot event, which was sponsored by President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on the sidelines of the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for President Biden’s innovative initiative aimed at preventing, identifying, and treating cervical cancer. He claimed that the program would go a long way toward providing affordable, accessible, and high-quality health care to people in the Indo-Pacific region. He mentioned that India was also launching a nationwide cervical cancer screening program. Speaking on India’s health security efforts, he stated that the government has created a cervical cancer vaccine and is working on an AI-based treatment strategy for the disease.
As part of India’s contribution to the Cancer Moonshot project, the Prime Minister announced a grant of US $7.5 million to cancer testing, screening, and diagnostics across the Indo-Pacific region, in line with India’s goal of ONE WORLD, ONE HEALTH. The Prime Minister also declared that India will fund radiation treatment and cancer prevention capacity building in the Indo-Pacific region. He also stated that Indo-Pacific countries will benefit from the provision of 40 million doses of vaccine from India through the GAVI and QUAD initiatives. The Prime Minister stated that when the Quad acts, it is not only for nations, but also for the people, which is the true essence of its human-centered approach.
India will also provide technical help to interested nations in the Indo-Pacific area on DPI for cancer screening, care, and treatment as part of its $10 million contribution to WHO’s Global Initiative on Digital Health.
Through the Cancer Moonshot initiative, the Quad leaders agreed to collaborate to close gaps in the Indo-Pacific cervical cancer care and treatment ecosystem. On this occasion, a Joint Cancer Moonshot Fact Sheet was produced.
