India celebrates Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, on November 26 every year as it marks the day the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. This day also marks the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s drafting committee, who was instrumental in shaping the Indian Constitution. The Indian government renamed Constitution Day, which was previously known as Law Day, in 2015.
November 26 commemorates the promulgation of the Indian Constitution in 1949, which took effect on January 26, 1950. Dr. Ambedkar, an ardent supporter for the rights of the downtrodden, chaired the committee that produced the Constitution, which took two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to complete.
Constitution Day 2024: History
Following India’s independence, the Constituent Assembly appointed a committee chaired by Dr. BR Ambedkar to prepare the Constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, served as President of the Constituent Assembly, which was created in 1946.
Dr. Ambedkar finalized and presented the draft of the Indian Constitution to the Constituent Assembly in early 1948. On November 26, 1949, this draft was adopted with little changes. The Indian Constitution went into effect on January 26, 1950, which is known as Republic Day.
The Constituent Assembly took nearly three years to finish the crucial and historic work of creating a Constitution for Independent India. The Indian Constitution is the world’s largest written constitution, with 1,17,360 words (in English).
The Preamble to India’s Constitution defines the country to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic with the goal of ensuring justice, liberty, and equality for all citizens while also promoting fraternity to safeguard the nation’s unity and integrity.
Constitution Day 2024: Significance
Samvidhan Divas pays honor to the document’s framers. The Indian Constitution was drafted by 271 men and women who served as members of the Constituent Assembly. By all measures, the Constitution serves as a forceful emancipation proclamation, bringing an end to decades of discrimination, economic, political, and social exclusion for millions. As a result, Constitution Day commemorates the vision and efforts of the Constituent Assembly, which created the groundwork for a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic via extensive deliberation.
