Stock Market Highlights, Jan 9, 2025: The benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty50, closed in negative territory on Thursday. The 30-share Sensex fell as much as 528.28 points (0.68 percent) to close at 77,620.21. Today, the index traded between 78,206.21 and 77,542.92.
NSE Nifty50, like the Sensex, ended lower by 162.45 points, or 0.69 percent, at 23,526.50. On Thursday, the Nifty50 reached a top of 23,689.50 and fell to a low of 23,503.05.
The day concluded in favor of the bears, as 34 of the 50 member companies of the Nifty50 fell, led by Shriram Finance, ONGC, Coal India, BPCL, and Tata Steel, with losses ranging up to 2.59%. Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto, Nestle India, Hindustan Unilever, Britannia Industries , and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the 16 constituent stocks that ended in the green, with gains extending up to 2.11 per cent.
The Nifty Smallcap100 and Nifty Midcap100 indices fell 0.93 percent and 1.35 percent, respectively, reflecting the benchmarks.
Except for the Nifty FMCG index, all sectors ended in negative territory. IT, PSU Bank index, financial services, consumer durables, and OMCs all fell by more than 1%. Meanwhile, the Nifty Realty index closed down 2.73 percent.
