Stock Market Highlights, Thursday, January 16, 2025: The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, two benchmark equity indices, closed Thursday’s trading session higher for the third straight day. The 30-share Sensex closed at 77,042.82, up 318.74 points, or 0.42 percent. Today, the index fluctuated between 77,319.50 and 76,895.51.
The NSE Nifty50 gained 98.60 points, or 0.42 percent, and ended the day higher at 23,311.80. The Nifty50 hit a high of 23,391.65 throughout the day and a low of 23,272.05.
With gains led by HDFC Life, Bharat Electronics, Shriram Finance, SBI Life, and Adani Ports, which increased to 7.99%, thirty-three of the fifty stocks that make up the Nifty50 concluded the day in the green.
On the other hand, 17 component stocks—led by Trent, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Tata Consumer, HCL Tech, and Infosys—finished lower, with losses reaching 2.90 percent.
The Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices ended the day higher by more than 1 percent each, indicating that broader markets did better than the benchmarks.
At 15.17 points, the fear index, which measures market volatility, concluded the day 1.35 percent higher.
The sectoral markets were dominated by banking shares, with Nifty PSU Bank closing 2.55 percent higher. Indian Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank led the gains. Following this, the Nifty Private Bank Index increased by 0.91 percent and the Bank Nifty increased by 1.08 percent.
The indices of Nifty Financial Services, Metal, and OMCs, among others, concluded the day higher by up to 2.06 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty IT, FMCG, Pharma, and Consumer Durables were among the sectoral indices that ended in red with losses extending up to 0.56 per cent on Thursday.
