Stock Market Highlights, Wednesday, January 29, 2025: The benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, rose for the second straight session on Wednesday, closing in the green. The 30-share Sensex rose 631.55 points, or 0.83 percent, to close at 76,532.96 after reaching a day high of 76,599.73.
The NSE Nifty50, like the Sensex, rose 205.85 points, or 0.90 percent, to settle at 23,163.10. On Wednesday, the index fluctuated between 23,183.35 and 22,976.50 points.
The day finished in favour of the bulls, with 42 of the Nifty50’s 51 component stocks closing in positive territory, headed by Shriram Finance, Bharat Electronics, Tata Motors, SBI Life, and Trent, which rose by up to 3.98 percent. Bharti Airtel, ITC Hotels, Maruti Suzuki India, Britannia, and Asian Paints, on the other hand, were among the 8 stocks that ended lower, with losses extending up to 3.53 per cent. Notably, ITC Hotels shares made their D-Street debut today, following its demerger from ITC’s other businesses.
The broader markets outpaced the benchmarks, with smallcap shares leading the charge, with the Nifty Smallcap100 index closing up 3.32 percent. Meanwhile, the Nifty Midcap100 closed up 2.31 percent.
The fear index, India VIX, which monitors market volatility, rose 2.44 percent to 18.64 points.
Except for FMCG, all sectoral indices ended in positive territory. Notably, the Nifty IT index rose 2.62 percent, led by Persistent Systems and LTIMindtree. The Nifty Auto, Healthcare, Financial Services, Realty, and Banking indices all closed up to 2.91 percent higher.
