Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the president of Sri Lanka, has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the country on April 5. According to the news outlet Adaderana.lk, Dissanayake made the declaration while addressing the Sri Lankan Parliament on Friday.
According to Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath last week, Modi’s visit will focus on finishing agreements reached during President Dissanayake’s visit to India last year.
The Sri Lankan president also informed Parliament that building of the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee, a crucial eastern port district, will begin simultaneously with Modi’s visit.
Dissanayake emphasized that Modi’s visit reflects the stability of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Health Minister Nalinda Jayathissa revealed last month that India and Sri Lanka had achieved an agreement to develop solar power plants in the island nation.
“Consensus has been reached between the governments of Sri Lanka and India to set up solar power plants with capacities of 50 Megawatt (Stage 1) and 70 Megawatt (Stage 2) at Sampur in Trincomalee. The project will be a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), based on construction, ownership, and operation,” Jayathissa said.
Initially, NTPC planned to build a coal-fired power station at the site. However, the amended agreement changes the project into a solar power plant.
