India and Pakistan have agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire,” US President Donald Trump declared on Saturday in a post on Truth Social, stating that the decision was reached after a “long night” of US-mediated discussions.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries for using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
India and Pakistan agreed to stop firing and military action from 5 pm today, the government announced in a press briefing today.
“DGMO (Director General of Military Operations) of Pakistan called up DGMO (of India) at 3.35 pm. They agreed that both sides will stop all firing and military action from land, air and sea from 5 pm onwards,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, adding that the DGMOs will talk again at noon on May 12.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also posted on X that “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action.”
“India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so,” he wrote.
The declaration comes just days after escalating tensions between India and Pakistan erupted following a terrorist incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 26 people last month. Days thereafter, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on nine terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing over 100 terrorists, according to the authorities.
Of the nine camps targeted, at least two – the Lashkar-e-Taiba headquarters in Muridke and the Jaish-e-Mohammed facility in Bahawalpur – had been on the radar of Indian security authorities for their involvement in a series of strikes in India over the last several decades. Matters escalated, and the two countries have been targeting each other’s facilities for the past three days.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also announced that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between the two neighbouring nations.
“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” he tweeted.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Vice President JD Vance and him engaged with senior officials of the neighbouring countries for the last two days to reach this decision.
“Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” he wrote.
