Stock market close highlights today, Monday, May 19, 2025: The benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 started the week’s first trading session in negative territory, owing mostly to profit booking at higher levels.
The BSE Sensex fell 271.17 points, or 0.33 percent, to close at 82,059.42. Among the top laggards were Eternal (down 3%), Infosys (down 1.95%), Tata Consultancy Services (down 1.20%), Tech Mahindra (down 1.19%), and Asian Paints (down 0.98%).
In contrast, 9 out of 30 constituent equities outperformed the market and generated gains. Power Grid Corporation surged by 1.27 percent, Bajaj Finance by 0.91 percent, NTPC by 0.64 percent, State Bank of India by 0.32 percent, and HDFC Bank by 0.17 percent, making them the top gainers among Sensex constituents.
The NSE Nifty50 finished down 74.95 points, or 0.30 percent, at 24,944.85.
However, broader markets demonstrated some resiliency. The Nifty Smallcap100 index surged 0.51%, while the Nifty Midcap100 index gained 0.07%, reflecting selective purchasing interest in the larger market segments.
The Nifty Realty and PSU Bank indices were the biggest gainers among the sectors indices, closing up 2.25 percent and 1.50 percent, respectively. Among other sectoral indices, Bank Nifty, Auto, Financial Services, Metal, Pharma, and Healthcare all finished in the green. On the other hand, IT, FMCG, Media, Consumer Durables, and Oil & Gas all closed in the red, with the Nifty IT index leading the way, down 1.37 percent.
Meanwhile, the fear gauge India VIX, which measures market volatility, increased by 4.89 percent to settle at 17.36.
