Stock Market close highlights, Friday, May 23, 2025: The benchmark Indian equity indices completed the week’s penultimate trading session in positive territory, boosted by increases in IT, FMCG, financial, and banking counters.
The BSE Sensex surged 769.09 points, or 0.95 percent, to 81,721.08. On Friday, the index fluctuated between 81,905.17 and 80,897.00 points. The NSE Nifty50 also closed higher by 243.45 points, or 0.99 percent, at 24,853.15.
The Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices settled with advances of 0.64 percent and 0.80 percent, respectively.
Except for Sun Pharma (down 1.84%) and Bharti Airtel (down 0.19%), all of the Sensex’s 28 member firms closed higher, with gains led by Eternal, Power Grid, ITC, Bajaj Finserv, and Nestle India ranging from 3.51% to 1.83%.
Market breadth remained strong, with 2,347 out of 4,106 traded equities on BSE closing higher, 1,600 down, and 159 unchanged. On Friday, as many as 98 equities reached 52-week highs on the BSE, while 23 fell below them.
On the sectoral front, the Nifty FMCG and Private Bank indexes beat others, closing up by more than 1.63 percent and 1.08 percent, respectively. Other sectors that had gains of up to 0.95 percent were IT, Financial Services, Metal, PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, and Realty.
The Nifty Pharma and Healthcare indices were the only sectoral losers. The former finished down 0.41 percent, while the latter sank by only 0.01 percent.
Meanwhile, the volatility index (India VIX), which measures market volatility, fell by 0.57 percent to 17.16 points on Friday.
