An upper air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal at 5.8 km above mean sea level has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘Yellow’ alert for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30-40 kmph) across several Odisha districts from June 9 to June 13.
According to the IMD’s mid-day weather bulletin, there has been light to moderate rainfall in a few spots in North Odisha and one or two places in South Odisha.
The IMD has also issued a ‘Yellow’ warning for June 9, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Similarly, another ‘Yellow’ warning has been issued for June 10 for likely occurrences in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.
On June 11, yet another ‘Yellow’ warning has been issued for the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
The IMD has extended the ‘Yellow’ warning for June 12 and 13, anticipating thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusts in one or two locations over many districts of Odisha.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution and take the essential safeguards during this time. The IMD also expects no notable change in maximum temperatures across the state in the following days.
