Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is preparing to return from the International Space Station (ISS). On June 26, as part of the Axiom 4 mission, he became the first Indian astronaut to board the International Space Station. Shukla, a Group Captain in the Indian Air Force, was sent to the International Space Station on June 25 on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft propelled by a Falcon-9 rocket. Shukla, also known as ‘Shux,’ has been aboard the space laboratory for about 18 days and is scheduled to return to Earth on July 15.
Dragon undocking from ISS
Shukla and his Axiom 4 crew will begin preparing for their return on July 14th. According to Axiom Space, the crew will depart the ISS at 4:35 PM IST. They will begin the entrance and hatch closure procedures about 2:25 PM IST.
Once undocked, they will spend approximately 22 hours in orbit, during which time the Dragon spacecraft will perform deceleration maneuvers before splashing down near the California coast on July 15 at 3 PM IST.
Shukla to undergo rehabilitation
ISRO has announced that Shukla would engage in a seven-day recuperation program after the splashdown. A medical professional will supervise this program to assist him re-adjust to Earth’s gravity.
Furthermore, NASA announced that the Dragon spacecraft will return with over 580 pounds of cargo, including NASA gear and data from more than 60 experiments completed during the mission.
