Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-nation visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives on Wednesday, with a packed agenda focused on strengthening strategic and regional partnerships.
In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi said, “I am embarking on a visit to the UK and the Maldives from 23 to 26 July.”
Highlighting India’s growing relationship with the United Kingdom, PM Modi wrote that both countries share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has seen significant progress in recent years. “Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health, and people-to-people ties,” he said.
He added that his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer would provide an opportunity to further enhance the economic partnership, aimed at fostering prosperity, growth, and job creation in both nations. PM Modi also expressed his anticipation of calling on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit.
On the second leg of the tour, Prime Minister Modi will visit the Maldives, where he will attend the country’s Independence Day celebrations on July 26 as the Guest of Honour.
“I will thereafter travel to the Maldives at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to join the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Independence of Maldives,” PM Modi wrote. He noted that the visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
Expressing the importance of the visit, the Prime Minister said, “I look forward to my meetings with President Muizzu and other political leadership, to advance our joint vision of a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, and to strengthen our cooperation for peace, prosperity and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.”
PM Modi concluded by stating, “I am confident that the visit will yield tangible outcomes, benefiting our people and advancing our Neighbourhood First Policy.”
