The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 has been announced by the Indian government as the country’s highest accolade for excellent and inspirational achievements to science, technology, and innovation. The awards, established to recognize pioneering research and remarkable achievements, seek to promote excellence and strengthen India’s scientific and technical ecosystem.
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is awarded in four categories: Vigyan Ratna (VR), Vigyan Shri (VS), Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB), and Vigyan Team (VT), spanning 13 fields like as Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and Space Science.

The Vigyan Ratna honors lifelong achievements to science and technology, whilst the Vigyan Shri recognizes outstanding work in specialized subjects. The Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award honors young scientists under the age of 45 who have made outstanding contributions, while the Vigyan Team Award recognizes joint efforts by groups of researchers or innovators.
Nominations for the 2025 awards were accepted from October 4 until November 17, 2024, via the national awards portal awards.gov.in. The selection process included a thorough examination by a high-level committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, which comprised Secretaries of Science Departments, Heads of Science Academies, and domain specialists.
Three IIT Madras professors, Prof. Thalappil Pradeep, Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, and Prof. Shweta Prem Agrawal, have been selected for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 in recognition of their contributions to science and technology-led innovation.
