Nitin Nabin, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national working president, is scheduled to file his nomination for the post of BJP national president today (January 19) at the party’s headquarters in the national capital. The nomination process is expected to be a display of strength at the party headquarters, with nearly all BJP chief ministers, state unit presidents, and senior party leaders scheduled to attend.

Nitin Nabin, a five-time Bihar MLA who was recently appointed as the BJP national working president, is expected to be elected unopposed as the party’s 12th national president, with party leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah supporting his candidacy, according to news agency PTI.

BJP national president election

According to the poll schedule released by BJP national returning officer K Laxman, nominations for the party’s national president would be accepted between 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday. The next BJP chief’s name will be announced the day after the election process is completed.

Nomination papers will be scrutinized between 4 and 5 p.m. on January 19, with candidates able to withdraw their nominations between 5 and 6 p.m. on the same day.

The BJP national president is elected by an electoral college made up of members of the party’s national council and several state councils. The entire process is overseen by the party’s national returning officer.

According to the BJP constitution, a candidate for the position must be proposed jointly by at least 20 members of the state’s electoral college. The nominee should have served four terms as an active member of the party and have at least 15 years of membership.

According to the constitution, such a joint proposal must come from at least five states that have already held national council elections.

Releasing the election schedule on Friday, the party’s national returning officer K Laxman had stated, “The polling will be held, if needed, on January 20 and an official announcement of the name of the new BJP national president will be made the same day.”

Who is Nitin Nabin?

Nitin Nabin is a senior BJP leader from Bihar who has deep political roots. He was born in Patna and is the son of the late Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, a noted BJP leader and former MLA. Following his father’s tragic death, he became actively involved in politics and gradually developed his own political personality.

He had represented the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Patna. Nabin is recognized as one of the BJP’s most trusted leaders in the state. He won four successive Assembly elections in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025, following his victory in a 2006 by-election.

In the recent Bihar Assembly elections, Nabin won convincingly from Bankipur, defeating his nearest rival by more than 51,000 votes. His recurrent electoral victories has enhanced his position within the party. Nabin now holds the Road Construction and Urban Development portfolios in Bihar’s NDA government led by Nitish Kumar.

It should be emphasized that Nabin is largely regarded as having played a major role in handling the BJP’s alliance with the JD(U) and contributing to the NDA’s election success. Beyond Bihar, Nabin has also served as the BJP’s in-charge of Chhattisgarh, demonstrating his growing power inside the party’s national structure.
