Stock Market Highlights on Thursday, March 12, 2026: The Indian benchmark equity index extended its losses as oil price volatility roiled market sentiment.
The Nifty50 closed 0.95 percent, or 227.70 points, lower at 23,639.15, while the Sensex closed 1.08 percent, or 829.29 points lower at 76,034.42.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Eicher Motors, and Maruti Suzuki India were the biggest losers on the Nifty50.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed shipping safety and India’s energy security with Iran’s equivalent in the final of three talks, according to External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Meanwhile, Iran has stated that it will let Indian-flagged ships to safely travel through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Business Standard.
Broader markets declined along with the main indices. The Nifty MidCap and SmallCap closed 0.37 and 0.69 percent lower, respectively.
The Nifty Auto was the worst-hit sectoral index, with limits on gas supplies and a broader shortage weighing on the automobile sector’s outlook. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty both underperformed.
The Nifty Oil and Gas emerged as the top performing sectoral index in Thursday’s session.
