Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made history as the longest-serving head of an elected government in India.
With this, PM Modi has overtaken Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served as Chief Minister of Sikkim for 8,930 days. He has now served as the head of government for 8,931 days, combining his tenures as Gujarat’s Chief Minister and Prime Minister, and is entering his 25th year of leadership.
The milestone is seen as a unique and remarkable achievement, signifying decades of uninterrupted public service and political leadership at the highest levels.
PM Modi has set several important records throughout his tenure, including being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister with the most prior experience as a CM.
He is also India’s first Prime Minister born after independence, having won three successive Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024, demonstrating political longevity and continuous voter mandate.
Narendra Modi became Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, and served in that capacity until May 21, 2014, governing the state for more than 13 years before transitioning to national politics.
On May 26, 2014, he was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister, becoming him the first non-Congress leader to achieve a complete majority in the Lok Sabha. He then became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve two full terms and return for a third consecutive term.
In addition to this achievement, PM Modi has reached several other key milestones this year, particularly in the digital realm.
Earlier this month, he hit 30 million followers on his YouTube channel, cementing his status as one of the platform’s most popular global leaders.
With this, he now leads both current and former heads of government in terms of subscriber base, far ahead of other major worldwide political personalities.
In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first serving world leader and politician to reach 100 million Instagram followers.
Since joining Instagram in 2014, his presence has progressively evolved into one of the most active and highly followed accounts among global leaders, demonstrating a consistent outreach strategy geared at engaging audiences both in India and around the world.
He is currently at 101 million followers on the social media platform.
On X, PM Modi has 106.4 million followers.
