Depression Forms Over Bay Of Bengal, Likely To Cross North Odisha Coast In Next 24 Hrs

The well-defined low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent parts of the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts has developed into a Depression.

The system was centered in latitude 21.1°N and longitude 87.2°E, approximately 50 kilometers south-southeast of Balasore, 60 kilometers northeast of Chandbali in Odisha, and 60 kilometers south-southwest of Digha in West Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the Depression would travel west-northwestward and traverse the North Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha, near Balasore, in the next 24 hours.

After crossing, it is predicted to continue moving west-northwest across North Odisha and North Chhattisgarh for the next 24 hours. The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings for various districts in Odisha today.

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in one or two locations in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nuapada, and Bolangir districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with exceptionally severe spells in isolated areas, is also predicted for Angul, Boudh, and Kandhamal districts.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in one or two locations in Jajpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Nabrangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nayagarh districts. Meanwhile, heavy rain is likely in one or two locations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Puri, and Khurda districts.

On Monday, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for severe to very heavy rainfall in Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Bolangir districts.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for heavy rainfall in Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawrangpur, and Nayagarh districts.

People in the affected districts have been asked to remain vigilant, avoid waterlogged areas, and take appropriate precautions against flooding and landslides in sensitive locations. Farmers and fishers are also asked to constantly follow official updates.
