A depression has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and nearby areas along the Odisha-West Bengal coasts, and the weather system is expected to intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The depression was centred around 8:30 a.m. IST on July 26, 2026, over the same location near latitude 20.6°N and longitude 88.4°E, about 130 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal, 140 km southeast of Digha, 170 km east of Chandbali in Odisha, and 180 km east-southeast of Baleshwar in Odisha.
According to the IMD, the system is predicted to move northwestward and cross the North Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around forenoon or noon of July 27.
The depression formed from a well-defined low-pressure region that remained over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The system gained intensity due to favorable air conditions and is predicted to develop further as it approaches the shore.
As the system approaches, several areas in Odisha are expected to receive rainfall. Coastal and adjacent areas may experience severe rainstorms, with localized heavy to very heavy rainfall possible in some areas.
The IMD stated that when the depression approaches the shore, it would provide additional updates on its path and intensity.
